How to pack for a week away with 12 pieces

You can wear a different outfit every day for a week with 12 pieces. The trick is to choose clothes that all work with each other, so every top goes with every bottom and every layer goes with everything.

The 12 piece formula

  • 4 tops. A mix of short and long sleeve, in colours that match your bottoms.
  • 3 bottoms. For example jeans, tailored pants and a skirt.
  • 1 dress or jumpsuit. Your fastest outfit and your dinner option.
  • 2 layers. A cardigan or knit, and a jacket or blazer.
  • 2 pairs of shoes. One walking pair and one dressier pair. Wear the heaviest pair on the plane.

Underwear, sleepwear, swimwear and accessories are extra. Keep them compact and count them separately.

Step 1: choose a colour base

Pick two or three colours that go together, such as navy, cream and olive, and one accent colour for a scarf, top or bag. When everything coordinates, you can mix and match without thinking.

Step 2: check the maths

With 4 tops and 3 bottoms you have 12 combinations before the layers and the dress. Add two layers and you have well over 20 outfits. You will not wear them all. That is the point: you have choices without carrying them.

Step 3: plan by activity, not by day

List what you will actually do: walking around town, a nice dinner, a travel day, a beach or pool afternoon. Make sure each activity has at least one outfit that works. Do not plan seven outfits for seven days, because plans change. Plan five or six outfits and treat the rest as spare.

Common mistakes

  • Packing a "just in case" outfit. It almost never leaves the suitcase.
  • New shoes. Break them in before the trip or leave them at home.
  • Too many colours. Every piece should go with at least three others.
  • Ignoring laundry. On a trip longer than a week, plan to wash once. Twelve pieces then covers two weeks.

Start with what you already own

Most of the outfits in this guide are already hiding in your wardrobe. The hard part is seeing your clothes together. Photograph one outfit you already wear and Modebase picks out each piece for you. Then you can ask for outfits in the chat you already use, such as ChatGPT or Claude, and it answers from your own clothes. For example:

I am going away for a week in April and want to pack 12 pieces from my wardrobe. Show me what to take and the outfits I can make from it.

Frequently asked questions

How many outfits can I make with 12 pieces?

If everything coordinates, 4 tops, 3 bottoms, 1 dress and 2 layers give you well over 20 outfits. You only need 6 or 7 for a week.

Do underwear and pajamas count in the 12 pieces?

No. Count outer clothing and shoes, and pack underwear, sleepwear and swimwear separately.

How do I pack for a week if I cannot do laundry?

Pack for the week without repeating outer layers more than twice, and wear the same jeans or pants more than once. Pants and jackets rarely need washing after one wear.

What colours work best for a capsule packing list?

Two or three neutrals plus one accent colour. Navy, cream, olive, grey, black and tan combine easily.
