The ChatGPT stylist prompt that uses the clothes you actually own

Search for "ChatGPT stylist" and the top result is a Substack post by Abhijay Arora Vuyyuru in the AI Action Letter, I turned ChatGPT into a $2,000 personal stylist. It is worth reading. The author gives ChatGPT four photos of themselves and a carefully built prompt, and gets back a style book with a capsule wardrobe, colour palettes and outfit formulas.

We liked the thinking in it. Get the written analysis first, correct what is wrong, then build from there, and treat the answer as advice from a stylist, not a verdict on your body. The post is also honest about its limit: a photo of you cannot show what is hanging in your cupboard.

Where a photo-only stylist runs out

A stylist who has only seen you can describe a lovely capsule. They cannot tell you which of those pieces you own, which you have worn twice, or that you already have the navy blazer the plan is asking you to buy. So you finish the job by hand, matching a generic capsule to a real wardrobe.

What changes with your real wardrobe

  • No describing clothes by hand. Modebase already holds your pieces and your saved style notes.
  • Every outfit is made of things you own. The capsule and the outfit formulas come from your own pieces, shown as looks.
  • The gaps are honest. The shopping list only holds what you are truly missing, so you buy less, not more.

Can AI be used as a personal stylist?

Yes, within limits. ChatGPT is good at combining pieces, matching a look to an occasion and explaining why it works. It cannot feel a fabric or see you move, and without your wardrobe it styles clothes you do not own. For a wider look at what it can and cannot judge, read how to use ChatGPT as your personal stylist.

What is a good ChatGPT personal stylist prompt?

A good one does four things: it reads your wardrobe before it suggests anything, asks about your real life, builds outfits only from pieces you own, and names what is truly missing. The prompt below does all four. If you would rather start from a photo of yourself, the photo-based stylist prompt is free too.

A prompt for fashion advice, not just outfits

Once the capsule is built, keep the same chat going and ask for fashion advice with your clothes in view: "Which of my pieces do I wear least, and what would make them work?" or "What is one thing I could add that would unlock the most new outfits?" Those answers come from your own pieces, so they stay practical. More ideas are in the ChatGPT wardrobe guide.

Try it

Upload a few outfit photos to Modebase first. One photo is enough to start, because it fills your wardrobe with the pieces in it. Then connect Modebase to ChatGPT (add it from Plugins), copy the prompt below and paste it into a fresh chat.

Answer the five questions it asks you. Those answers are what turn a generic capsule into one that fits your week.

Tips

  • Ask for one thing at a time: the capsule first, then the outfits, then the plan.
  • Correct it. If it picks something you never wear, say so and it will adjust.
  • Only share what you are comfortable sharing, and check your ChatGPT data controls.

Act as my personal stylist, using my Modebase wardrobe. Only use pieces that are in my wardrobe.

STEP 1, READ MY WARDROBE
Look at my wardrobe and my saved style notes. Tell me in five short lines what my style already is, which colours and shapes I own the most of, and what I wear least. Then stop and ask me if that sounds right.

STEP 2, GET TO KNOW MY LIFE
Ask me up to five questions, one at a time: my work, my weekends, any events coming up, my budget, and anything I feel uncomfortable in. Wait for each answer before you ask the next.

STEP 3, BUILD MY CAPSULE
Choose a capsule of 12 to 15 pieces from what I own, then show me five outfit formulas I can repeat, each shown as a look.

STEP 4, MY 30 DAY PLAN
Give me what to wear this week, the pieces I own but ignore and how to wear them, and what is genuinely missing. Sort the gaps into buy now, buy later and skip. Never suggest buying something I could replace with a piece I already own.

Keep it warm and honest, like advice from a stylist and not a verdict on my body. If a question is better answered with a piece I own, use it.
