How to pack carry-on only for 10 days
Ten days in a carry-on is very doable. It saves checked bag fees, avoids lost luggage and makes getting around easier. The secret is to pack fewer pieces that all work together, and to plan one wash.
Check the rules first
Carry-on size and weight limits differ by airline, and budget airlines are stricter. Check your airline's current limits before you pack. Liquids in the cabin are limited to small containers, in most airports 100 ml each, all in one clear bag.
The 10 day list
- 5 tops in two or three coordinating colours
- 3 bottoms: for example jeans, tailored pants and a skirt or shorts
- 1 dress that works for day and evening
- 2 layers: a light knit and a jacket
- 2 pairs of shoes (wear the bulkiest pair on the flight)
- Underwear and socks for 5 or 6 days, because you will wash once
- Sleepwear, swimwear and one scarf
Pick fabrics that behave
Choose fabrics that resist creases, dry quickly and do not hold smells, such as jersey, merino, ponte, lightweight knits and many synthetic blends. Leave heavy denim and bulky knits at home unless the climate demands them. Wear your heaviest items on the plane.
How to pack it
- Roll or fold soft clothes tightly, and use packing cubes to keep everything organised.
- Put shoes at the bottom near the wheels, with socks and small items inside them.
- Keep heavy items low and soft items on top.
- Leave room for one extra item. A bag that is stuffed on day one has no space for souvenirs.
Plan one wash
Around day five, wash underwear, tops and socks in a sink or at a laundromat, or use the hotel laundry. Choose quick-drying clothes and hang them overnight. One wash turns ten days into two five-day trips.
Test it at home
Pack the bag a week before you go and wear every outfit once in your head, or even in your living room. Remove anything that does not go with at least three other pieces. Then weigh the bag. If it is heavy, take out one pair of shoes or one bottom and try again. See also how to pack for a week away with 12 pieces and what to pack for Bali, Europe, Hawaii or a US road trip.
Start with what you already own
Most of the outfits in this guide are already hiding in your wardrobe. The hard part is seeing your clothes together. Photograph one outfit you already wear and Modebase picks out each piece for you. Then you can ask for outfits in the chat you already use, such as ChatGPT or Claude, and it answers from your own clothes. For example:
I am going to Italy for 10 days in May with only a carry-on. Pick my pieces from my wardrobe and plan what I wear each day.
Frequently asked questions
Can you really pack for 10 days in a carry-on?
Yes. Pack about 12 to 15 pieces that all mix and plan one wash. Most travelers bring far more than they wear.
How many pairs of shoes should I pack in a carry-on?
Two: one comfortable walking pair and one dressier pair. Wear the bulkiest pair on the plane.
Should I roll or fold clothes in a carry-on?
Rolling saves space for soft items like tees and knits. Fold structured pieces like blazers. Packing cubes help keep it tidy.
What if I cannot do laundry on my trip?
Pack more underwear and socks, and choose pants and jackets you can wear several times. Many women also use a small bottle of travel wash for a sink wash.
