The shop-your-gaps prompt: the few pieces that unlock the most outfits
Standing in front of a full wardrobe with nothing to wear usually ends the same way: another black jumper, bought in hope, worn twice. The problem is almost never that you own too little. It is that a small number of missing links are quietly stranding the clothes you already have.
This prompt finds those links. Instead of a shopping list, it asks ChatGPT for the smallest number of pieces, five at most, that would complete the most outfits from what you already own, and to justify each one by what it unlocks rather than by how nice it is.

"Five at most" is the constraint that turns a wishlist into a plan. Given no limit, ChatGPT will happily list fifteen sensible additions, which is the same as no advice. The cap forces it to find the pieces that actually carry weight.
"Name the specific gap and how many outfits it completes" forces real reasoning instead of vibes. "A white shirt would go with your three blazers and both suits, adding about six looks" is useful. "A white shirt is a great basic" is a magazine sentence.
"Lead with what it completes, not with shopping" is doing the heavy lifting. Capsule and wardrobe content online is overwhelmingly commercial, so the model drifts toward buying unless explicitly told not to. This line keeps it anchored to your closet.
"If nothing is needed, say so" is the most valuable answer the prompt can give, and the one no shopping article will ever offer you.

The three ways it fails
It becomes a shopping list anyway. The suggestions creep toward "and a nice trench, and some boots." Restate rule three and ask it to re-anchor every pick to a specific gap in your wardrobe.
It suggests things you already own. A sign it lost track of your list. "I already own a white shirt, it is on my list. Redo using only real gaps."
The numbers go vague. "Adds versatility" instead of "completes four outfits" is the tell that your wardrobe outran the chat's memory, which is the whole argument for a connected one.
